Playing an instrument looks amazing in these films! When combined, listening to good-quality songs and watching good-quality films can be magical. Here are some films that have good quality songs to speak to the soul (and beyond).
August Rush
It tells the story of an orphaned baby whose mother died during childbirth and was given away by her father. He tries to raise him alone but eventually gives him up for adoption because he couldn’t take care of him anymore. But when the adoptive couple gets pregnant, they decide to keep the baby and name him after himself. They teach him to play the piano and sing so that he can help people remember their loved ones.
Whiplash
I haven’t watched this movie yet, but I’m excited to see Miles Teller play a role that requires him to act crazy. He’s got an amazing face and body, so I’m sure his acting ability will shine through. I’ll definitely check out this movie after watching “The Spectacular Now”.
Bohemian Rhapsody
The story of Freddie Mercury, the lead singer of the rock band Queen, is told through the film Bohemian Rhapsody (2018). In the opening scenes, we meet him as a child growing up in Zanzibar, where he lives with his family. He grows up into a rebellious teenager who falls in love with music. After leaving school he joins a local band called Smile, which later changed its name to Queen. Their first big break comes after they sign a record deal with EMI Records.
They soon begin writing new material and touring Europe, playing gigs in front of thousands of people. They eventually release their debut album Sheer Heart Attack, which goes platinum and wins them international fame. During this period, Mercury begins experimenting with drugs, which leads to his addiction to heroin. Eventually, Mercury leaves the group due to his drug abuse. He takes a hiatus from performing and tries to kick his habit. However, his addiction continues to plague him, and he finally succumbs to AIDS. He passes away in 1991.
Yesterday
I’ve heard about people who get famous for things they did not write about. But I’m not one of them. I wrote these lyrics. And I am proud of them. They’re good enough to make me famous. So let’s see how far I can take this.
Walk the Line
I haven’t seen this film either, but the plot is about how country singer Johnny Cash became famous. We start off with a young man living on a small family ranch, where his father beats him regularly. He eventually leaves home, only to find himself homeless and penniless. However, he finds success as a musician, becoming one of the biggest stars in the world. His relationship with June Carter also plays a big part in the film.
School of Rock
One of the greatest movies Jack Black has ever been a part of, even though he’s admitted so himself. As a pretend substitute teacher, Black gets the school’s class into creating a band and getting them all involved in finding each others’ niches. Unknowingly, he is not really a teacher and uses the pupils to get a victory in a battle of the band after being fired from his adult band. Once his plan is discovered, the children aren’t too happy to give up and want the performance to continue!
The Pianist
I’ve never heard of this film before, but it sounds really interesting. I’m not familiar with the plot either, but I’ll watch it just to see what happens. I know it won’t disappoint me.
Drumline
A kid trying out to join his high school marching band can’t actually read music but is one of the top musicians this high school has ever had. Unfortunately, his musical abilities aren’t going to cut it, so he tries to balance both his band activities and his studies. He may not make it into the band, but maybe he’ll find something else to do with his talents.
Rocketman
This is a retelling of a fantastic story about a famous singer named, Elton John. He was born into poverty and grew up without any education. He had no idea what he wanted to do with his future until one day he heard a song called “Rocket Man” by Elton John. At first, he thought it was just another song he would forget, but then he realized that he loved it. So he decided to sing it himself. His voice was so good that people started calling him Rocket Man. After that, he became very successful and went on tours around the world.
A Star is Born
A struggling actress, Ally meets a movie star, Jackson Maine who helps set her acting aspirations into motion. She becomes a popular icon as she blossoms in her new role, but he struggles with his own personal issues. They try to keep their relationship together but their lives pull them in different directions. Will they make it out alive or will the deep end consume them?
